urban space
The performative installation SHIFT creates changing moments and temporarily activates the plaza in front of St Peter's Church, which goes unnoticed in everyday life, as part of the Baltic UrbCultural Planning Conference in Kiel.
SHIFT consists of long, pink fabric banners that create different spatial situations on the square depending on their position. Inspired by C. Alexander's “A Pattern language”, the different approaches to dealing with public spaces are analysed. The theme of the conference “urban transformation through arts and culture” and the aspect of ”placemaking“ are playfully thematised by the installation and made visible at the site of the event through five patterns/situations. The perception of the square and its surroundings changes depending on the pattern and leads to exciting interactions between the visitors and the site.
SHIFT is an experimental way of interacting with visitors and making the theoretical conference content visually visible and tangible.
