In 2020, the BFI London Film Festival established the new category “XR and Immersive art” under the title LFF EXPANDED. Since then, the festival has been held annually in different formats.
A hybrid format will be realised in 2021, both as a physical and virtual VR exhibition. For this purpose, the virtual exhibition will be adapted in terms of design and atmosphere according to this year's works and the virtual brutalist architecture will be bathed in a soothing pink colour.
In the physical exhibition, the selected XR works will be staged in the tunnel vaults of 26 Leake Street below Waterloo Station in London. The spatial design of the approx. 800 square metre venue included not only the cohesive staging of the 14 different works, but also the planning of a reception and lounge area. As the basic architecture of the venue consists of large, open spaces with only a few spatial divisions, it requires spatially organising main exhibition architecture. This is provided by an open, walk-in frame construction, which is closed off at suitable points by large-format signage panels. The result is a suggestion of interior and exterior spaces that relate to the Covid period, which is the theme of some of the works.
