KOMM' RUM invites people to come together and share stories, memories and ideas about the Johannstadt neighbourhood in Dresden.
KOMM' RUM is part of the format “Plattenwechsel - WIR in Aktion”, which was brought to life by the upcoming relocation of the socio-cultural centre JOKT. It involves Johannstadt residents at various levels in the relocation process. The participatory format KOMM' RUM is one of the kick-off projects.
In the first part, the postcard workshop invites people to design their own postcards with memories and stories - based on personal mementos from Johannstadt. In the second part, the three mobile KOMM' RUM storytelling stations will be built together with local residents as part of a construction and sewing workshop lasting several days. The storytelling stations consist of the wheel of fortune turntable, the inflatable cushions and the postcard stand. Together we saw, screw and paint, build stools, make the mobile stations out of wood and concrete the foundations. Fabrics are printed and sewn into new parasol covers and giant cushion islands. Old materials and objects, e.g. from ZÜNDSTOFFE Materialvermittlung Dresden, are repurposed and reassembled. The design and colour scheme create a visual signal effect that invites people to pass by, both in the urban space and from the surrounding balconies.
The KOMM' RUM storytelling stations are activated and inaugurated after intensive construction days. Together with the participants and local residents, the stations will travel through the district for the first time on the 15th of August, stopping off at various locations. In the coming years, KOMM' RUM will be used by the neighbourhood center Johannstädter Kulturtreff to facilitate new forms of encounter and exchange in the neighbourhood. They form a living, visible and flexible neighbourhood archive. The storytelling stations are equipped with additional "documentation tools" such as a question box and a recording device. The board surface of the wheel of fortune table can be rewritten with different questions and sentences depending on the occasion and the postbox receives postcards with memories and stories.
