Our collective developed a prototype of the VR work entitled GRÜN AUF, KUMPEL*IN! (following the traditional German miners’ greeting “Glück auf!”) as part of a five-day hackathon at the Biennale der Urbanen Landschaft in Gelsenkirchen. The work focusses on the forecourt of the Heilig Kreuz church in Gelsenkirchen, which was also staged as part of the presentation.
According to the current state of the global climate catastrophe, the earth will warm by 1.5 to 4 degrees. With our utopias within a kind of climate resilience simulator, we want to give visitors to the exhibition the opportunity to experience under VR glasses what it feels like to stand on the church forecourt in a sandstorm, to be surprised by a tidal wave or to be exposed to the glaring light of the sun. To emphasise the feeling of being at the mercy of others, an outsider decides on the scenario and the vegetation on a tablet.
In contrast to the virtual scenarios, the paved forecourt of the Heilig-Kreuz-Kirche was temporarily planted with a large number of small fruit trees, thus visualising a possible future vision for this location. The fruit trees were then given away to the residents of the neighbourhood.
