urban space
In Zen Buddhism, ensō corresponds to a hand-drawn circle that symbolises the expression of the moment.
ENSŌ - a joint project with medical designer Shaouhan Hu - was created on the basis of an interdisciplinary excursion to Japan. By analysing the boundary between water and land both in Japanese temples and in Kiel's urban space, we attempt to redefine this boundary.
A piece of shore breaks off and a temporary island is formed. The break-off is subtle - a weight sensor provides the impulse. The island then drifts away slowly, almost unnoticed. Half an hour passes before the island docks on land again. No influence can be exerted on the journey, you can only surrender to the situation. A large tree and a perfectly circular hole serve as a tension between natural and artificial moments of irritation.
