The new design concept LESEN IM MOOR (translation: Reading in the moor) for the remodeling of the district library in Hamburg Rahlstedt creates a modern space offering a variety of atmospheres for reading, studying and relaxing.
The choice of colours and materials references the surrounding nature reserves. Therefore, on the ground floor, shades of green predominate, dividing the approximately 415 m² open-plan space into distinct areas. Thematic features are highlighted in a complementary orange colour. A bench runs along the generous window front on both floors, incorporating various functions and seating options. The height-adjustable service counters have also been redesigned to be wheelchair accessible.
In the children’s area, pedestals shaped like large pebbles, small portable seating cushions and seating islands invite children to read or be read to. Felt elements and wall panels improve the acoustics. The colour palette is complemented by a playful shade of pink.
An open stairwell framed by translucent fabrics leads up to the upper floor, which measures approximately 155 m², creating a distinct spatial atmosphere in the stairwell and subtly separating the upper workspaces from one another. The colour scheme here shifts to autumnal shades of red and brown, with green as an accent colour.
When selecting materials, the focus was not only on colours that were thematically appropriate and harmonious, but also on the durability and recyclability of the products. Durable coated birch wood was used as the main material. The new flooring consists of carpet tiles that trap fine dust. The playful dotted fronts of the service counter were fully made from recycled plastic. Wall panels out of wood wool were installed to improve the acoustics. The pedestals in the children’s area are made of recycled and recyclable linoleum, and the various seating islands have been upholstered with durable wool fabrics. In addition, special curtains offering glare and heat protection have been fitted to the large window fronts.
