The new design concept LESEN IM MOOR (translation: Reading in the moor) for the remodeling of the district library in Hamburg Rahlstedt creates a welcoming space with a variety of atmospheres for reading, studying and relaxing.
The colour and material palette draws inspiration from the surrounding nature reserves of the district. Accordingly, shades of green dominate the ground floor, structuring the 415 sqm open-plan space into distinct zones.Thematic features, such as the ‘Library of Things’, are highlighted in a complementary orange colour. In the children’s area, pedestals shaped like large pebbles, small portable seating cushions and seating islands invite children to read or be read to. Felt elements and wall panels improve the acoustics.
An open stairwell framed by translucent fabrics leads up to the upper floor, which measures approximately 155 aqm, creating a distinct spatial atmosphere in the stairwell and subtly separating the upper workspaces from one another. The colour scheme here shifts to shades of red and brown, with green as an accent colour. In addition to generous workspaces, this level accommodates an extensive magazine collection and the young adult section
Along the expansive window frontage on both floors, a continuous bench integrates a variety of functions and seating options.
Harmonious colours, durable materials and sustainable solutions: from Cradle-to-Cradle-certified carpet tiles to elements made from recycled plastic, the material selection was guided by a commitment to design quality, longevity and resource conservation. In addition, special curtains offering glare and heat protection have been fitted to the large window fronts.
